Vital Records - Maine
Collects and maintains records of births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages, and divorces dating from January 1, 1892 to present, issuing certified copies on request. As of July 30, 2004, the Maine CDC vital records office has established and maintains a Domestic Partner Registry.

Per state law, all vital records – such as notices of birth, death and marriage – dating from 1892 to the present day, are no longer available at the Maine State Archives.* The records dating from 1892 – 1922 were previously held at the Archives, but have now been digitally scanned, allowing the Vital Records office to issue these documents.

The Vital Records Office of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services has copies of births from 1923 to present day. Births from 1892 to 1922 are held by the Maine State Archives. Births before 1892 are held by the individual town clerk offices. Restrictions to qualify for certificates for persons born within the last 100 years:

Ordering Birth, Death, Marriage, and Divorce Certificates Certified copies of birth, death, or marriage records from 1892 to the present are available from the Office of Vital Records or from the city or town where the event took place. Divorce records from 1892 through the present may be obtained from the Office of Vital Records.
